Ghost Note
Once a Beatle. Twice forgotten. Two men history wrote out of its biggest story find each other in an ordinary Liverpool bakery.
Liverpool, 1965 and 1968; Strawberry Fields, Central Park, November 1980. Two men who each spent a fleeting moment inside the biggest band in the world find each other by accident in an ordinary Liverpool bakery.
Pete Best was the Beatles’ drummer through two years of Hamburg clubs and Cavern gigs before being dismissed on the eve of their fame, replaced by Ringo Starr. Jimmy Nicol was their emergency stand-in for thirteen days in 1964, thrown onto a world stage in Ringo’s suit before vanishing back into obscurity.
When Jimmy wanders into the Liverpool bakery where Pete now works, neither man plans anything more than a transaction, but three mornings, then a long night trading Beatles stories over an improvised drum kit made of bread tins and a wooden spoon, forge an unlikely bond between two men written out of history’s biggest story.
Fifteen years later, three weeks after John Lennon’s murder, they find each other again as strangers on a bench at the Strawberry Fields memorial, and discover that being a “ghost note”, playing underneath a song so softly that no one consciously hears it, is not the same as being nothing.
Inspired by actual events; the conversations are fiction, but the history is real.
